Gardening Club
This year we have transformed our sad-looking gardening area into a wonderful space for the children to grow a multitude of plants and vegetables. This includes, spring onions, tomatoes, beetroot, peas, leeks, onions, sweetcorn, potatoes, strawberries, gherkins, cucumber, sweet peppers, radishes, broccoli, spinach, carrots, butternut squash, parsnips, cabbage, lettuce, courgettes and herbs.
We run a weekly gardening club where children learn about growing seeds in the right seasons, making fertiliser from weeds (stinging nettles and dandelions). The children learn how to make compost using greens and browns. They also monitor the growing process of each plant for the harvest and how to dry and save seeds from fruit and vegetables.
Once the process is complete, we share our plants with the school to share knowledge of how plants grow. Seeds are given to reception and forest schools . We also supply the school kitchen with our harvest to use for school dinners. This includes tomatoes, lettuce, courgette and radishes.
The school also has weekly cooking lessons and uses the produce from the gardening club. We make potato and leek soup in September from last year's harvest.
Each year, the children get to take some of their harvest home to share with their own families, and we plan to make popcorn with the sweetcorn this year as a healthy snack!
