Natural History Museum

During our Dangerous Dinosaurs topic we read lots of different Dinosaur books, one of which peaked the children’s interest. This was called ‘Dear Dinosaur’. In the book a little boy wrote a letter to his local museum and got a reply back.

The little boy in the story inspired the children to write to the museum themselves. The children developed new knowledge and practiced key skills in line with the EYFS to produce such a wonderful letter. We posted a rather large envelope which included children’s drawings of their favourite dinosaurs along with letters that the children had written independently. The children also thought of some fantastic questions for the museum to answer to extend their learning. Some of the questions the children asked were ‘What did dinosaurs eat? How did they sleep? Where can you find dinosaur fossils?’ The children worked together and were so proud of what they had produced. Once posted, we eagerly awaited a delivery from the postman and we were extremely lucky to receive such a wonderful response!

What a lovely delivery it was! Inside the envelope was a hand written book by ‘Terry the T-Rex’, full of drawings, facts and little funny statements that the children and adults enjoyed reading. At the back of the booklet was the answers to the 10 questions the children asked! All in detail and in child-friendly language. Included in the envelope was also a poster and a postcard sent from the museum and ‘Terry the T-Rex’. We have created a learning wall which displays the booklet for the children to revisit and continue learning about dinosaurs. The children often discuss this wonderful experience and it has provoked more questions and queries which we have been able to research. Some of the children have visited the Natural History Museum with their families and have been able to share their photos with everyone at Nursery.

St Clares Nursery want to say a massive thank you to The Natural History Museum for taking the time to reply to the children’s letter. This activity has been a great addition to our topic and has helped the children to fully engage in the activities and learning that has taken place.

As this has been a huge topic of interest for the children, we are hoping to create a dinosaur world in our outside area for the children to explore. They will be able to apply their learning and knowledge to the imaginary world scenarios with their friends.
