Laudato Si’ – Caring for Our Common Home

Laudato Si’ is Pope Francis’ teaching about our responsibility to care for the world God has given us. It reminds us that creation is a gift from God and that we are called to be good stewards of our common home, caring for the earth, its resources and all living things.

At St Clare’s, we try to put this teaching into action in practical ways. Our children learn that caring for creation is part of living out our Catholic faith and showing love for others. Around our school grounds, we have created bug hotels to provide safe habitats for insects and other small creatures, and we leave areas of our field unmown so that wildflowers can grow and wildlife can thrive. These small changes help children to see how biodiversity can be protected and encouraged.

Our pupils are also encouraged to take part in eco action across the school by thinking carefully about waste, recycling, saving water and energy, caring for plants and wildlife, and considering how their everyday choices affect the world around them.

The Aim of Our Laudato Si’ Group

The aim of our Laudato Si’ Group is to help our school community respond to Pope Francis’ call to care for our common home and to be good stewards of God’s creation.

The group gives children an active voice in caring for the environment and helps them to recognise that even small actions can make a difference. Pupils help to identify ways we can become a more sustainable school, such as reducing waste, recycling, saving energy and water, protecting wildlife and improving biodiversity in our school grounds.

Through projects such as our bug hotels, wildlife areas and leaving parts of the field unmown, children learn that caring for creation is part of living out our Catholic faith. The group also encourages the wider school community to think about how our choices affect both the planet and other people, especially those who are most vulnerable.

Ultimately, the Laudato Si’ Group helps our children to understand that they have a responsibility to love, protect and care for the world God has entrusted to us.

Through these actions, we are responding to Pope Francis’ call in Laudato Si’ to protect our common home and helping our children understand that they each have a part to play in caring for God’s creation.

MINI VINNIES AT ST CLARE'S

St Vincent de Paul Society

Our Mini Vinnies are children who put their faith into action by following the example of St Vincent de Paul and showing love, compassion and service to others.

Through prayer, discussion and practical action, they look for ways to support people in our school, parish and wider community, especially those who may be lonely, vulnerable or in need. They help organise charitable activities, raise awareness of important issues and encourage others to think about how they can make a positive difference.

Being a Mini Vinnie helps children to grow in kindness, responsibility, teamwork and faith. It also brings Catholic Social Teaching to life by encouraging children to care for others, stand in solidarity with those in need and work for the Common Good.

At St Clare’s, our Mini Vinnies show that even small acts of love and service can make a big difference.
