OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning)

OPAL stands for Outdoor Play and Learning!

OPAL's mission statement is "To ensure that every schoolchild has an amazing playtime everyday with no exceptions".

  • We aim to:
  • improve well-being
  • develop self-regulation
  • increase physical activity
  • aid social and emotional development
  • learn to manage risk
  • have FUN!

This programme is a journey that we're undertaking over the next 12-18 months with OPAL, developing the playground and play of the children.

What our Parents say about OPAL Play!

The range of activities on offer ‘never get boring’, his words!

For us, the biggest benefit is seeing how much he enjoys it and how engaged he is with his friends and the different activities available.

It really helps with his imagination. He said they have a secret base, they also use the climbing wall to hide behind. He really enjoys the sandpit and the "giant mountain" next to it, he likes to roll down the hill and uses the outdoor gym every day.

I love that she can go out and play in all weathers and that she can be free to climb, get muddy, be adventurous and be a child.

There is so much to do outside. He told me he likes building volcanoes and mountains in the sandpit with his friend and seeing how big they can make them. Having Opal play has really helped him to focus his energy, stay regulated, use his own imagination with lots of resources to choose from and has widened his interests.

What stands out most is how inclusive the provision feels. There appears to be something for every child, regardless of their interests or confidence levels, and it is encouraging to see children developing friendships, teamwork and communication skills through play. The outdoor environment is vibrant and well-used, creating opportunities for children to be active, creative and engaged.
