St Clare's Catholic Primary School

With Jesus we learn to love and love to learn

Why do we teach Art at St Clare's School?

At St Clare's, we provide our children with a creative and highly engaging curriculum which gives our children the opportunity to express themselves through Art.

We believe that all children can be artists as Art is subjective and every child can access Art in their own, individual way. We teach children a progression of artistic skills through a broad, cross curricular approach. Our children become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques. St Clare’s children learn about famous artists, craft makers and designers and they recognise they could be the Artists or Designers of the future!

Mission Statement

With Jesus, we learn to love and love to learn

Our Vision

To give every child a sense of belonging, so that they have a safe and stable base from which to develop and learn.

To enable every child to grow academically, socially, morally, spiritually and culturally in the knowledge that they are loved by God and can feel safe and valued within our school community.

To nurture and support children through their primary school journey so that they are confident and well equipped  to progress into the wider world as strong, independent learners and thoughtful, caring individuals.

Our Values

Our Intent

In Art and Design, St. Clare’s school aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • Produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences
  • Become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques
  • Evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design
  • Know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms.

*Taken from the National Curriculum in England: art and design programmes of study – Key stages 1 and 2

Through weekly Art lessons, children develop skills in drawing and painting, printing, collage, and sculpture, and are given the opportunity to explore and evaluate different creative ideas.

Children will be taught how to follow a creative process through; from gathering ideas and inspiration, to planning and production, and finally, evaluation.

Children will be introduced to a range of works and develop knowledge of the styles and vocabulary used by other artists.

Planned “Art days” are held each term to give children the opportunity to explore new areas of Art. They are given the freedom to be expressive and creative and apply new skills.

  • Children are skilled in how to create a piece of effective art
  • Children know and understand different processes and they can talk about what they have used in their work and evaluate their final piece
  • At St Clare’s, we aspire for every child to have a love of art and design and feel proud of what they can achieve.
